Disaster Survival Kits - Health - Wellness

There are numerous products on the market that are aimed at helping people survive emergencies and disasters. These survival kits come in a wide range of sizes and can vary in the type of content they contain. From small-scale emergency kits to more intense disaster survival kits, the purpose behind these products is to help people be prepared for and cope with the unexpected.

An example of smaller emergency kits would be a product that is designed to be kept in the customer's car. Its contents may include flares, a small radio and perhaps simple first-aid products. Additional items such as hand warmers and flashlights can also be bought to enhance the efficiency of these smaller emergency kits.

Survival kits are also sold for specific potential events, such as severe weather emergencies. These kits often contain radios that run off of hand crank or solar power, emergency water pouches, blankets, emergency light sources, a first aid kit and in some cases emergency food rations. These survival kits can help their users prepare for and survive a wide range of emergencies from tornados and hurricanes, to flash flooding and severe winter weather. Being able to survive for a few days without electricity and running water is vital in these emergency situations, and these kits make this possible.

Disaster survival kits for more serious emergencies and catastrophies also exist, and are designed to help the customer endure harsh conditions over a longer period of time. These kits will generally include food and water rations (in a larger quantity than packs engineered for less serious emergencies), multi-purpose tools, cold packs, ointments and even materials to help build a shelter. These disaster survival kits are often packaged according to the number of people they are meant to sustain (for example '1 Person Packs' or '2 Person Packs'), in addition to the number of days they are designed to last. For more severe or prolonged disasters, additional items such as pre-made meals can be purchased to supplement the supplies that are included. These meals contain their own heating elements, and are designed to give you the nutrients you need in order to survive. For disasters that cut an individual or family off from a potable water source, water purification kits can b e purchased which will allow the potential victim to cleanse up to 30 gallons of water.

Are You Prepared for Emergency Survival Following a Solar Storm? Part IV - News - Weather

Solar storms are coming. The current solar maximum is projected to peak in late 2012 to early 2013. World organizations and governments are quietly organizing. What are our governments, and scientists doing to prepare. We know that they have been meeting with increased frequency, and diversity, but what answers or information have they given us about the very likely upcoming solar storm activity? What instructions have they given us about preparation?

The truth is the world governments and organizations are having a difficult time trying to plan for the potential upcoming solar super storm. The numbers of people that will be affected are just too great for them to come up with a plan to take care of everyone. They will surely come up with a plan, but they will only be able to protect a finite number of people. So the rest of us are left to fend for ourselves.

In order to address what youll need to prepare for an upcoming solar super storm, we must look at what the effects of such a storm will be. The satellites that surround the earth will be the first casualties of an extreme coronal mass ejection. Some scientist suggest that if they are put into a sleep like mode that they could survive. The shear amounts of energy that will bombard the electrical systems in these satellites lead us to believe otherwise. So communications are the first losses we will suffer. Cell phones, internet, television, and government coordination will cease. Next to go are the huge transformers at the power stations on the daylight side of the earth. When these transformers blow, they are more than likely be irreparable, at least on-site. The effect will be the loss of power grids across that side of the globe. Transportation will likely be greatly reduced as production, and distribution of fuels will be impacted.

With no power, short rang communication only, and scarce supply lines, communities will be forced to work together to survive. Medical supplies, food, and clean water will be the primary items needed for survival. Depending on where you live and the time of year, staying warm may also be an important consideration.

Many neighborhoods have begun setting up Community Emergency Response Teams or CERT. These organizations are preparing to help following many different types of disasters, and emergencies. They consist of professional police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical personnel, and they also train others in the neighborhood to assist in many different rolls. While these types of organizations will be vital in each community, individuals also need to prepare.

Each family should already have short term emergency survival kits that will last them for at least 72 hours, but more will be needed. It is recommended for individuals to keep their homes stocked with a decent amount of non-perishable foods. With no electricity food in refrigerators and freezers will need to be cooked and eaten in short order. It is also important to have a good supply of some MREs or non-perishable meals that have a long shelf life. It will be important to have camp stoves, barbeques, or emergency portable stoves with fuel tablets, to be able to cook with, boil water, and wash with. Lighting will be necessary in the night time hours, and batteries will only get you so far. We recommend lighting that uses human, or solar power to charge them up. For clean water you will either need to boil it, or have a way to purify it. Water purification tablets, and micro-water filters like those used when camping are best.

You can be prepared for the solar super storm, but it will take action on everyones part to stock up on the essentials. Communities, of individuals working together will be key, and these organizations need support, and supplies to be ready to assist for what ever emergency arises. So dont wait, take action now to prepare your family for whatever the future may bring.

Emergency Survival Action Required Before Massive CME Hits - News - Weather

Building or purchasing an Emergency Survival Kit is one thing we all know we should do. Well now may be a good time to act, as one of the next few Coronal Mass Ejections could hit earth head on. It could revert our Electronics Age back to the Stone Age!

The Behemoth sunspot that has been labeled 1302, and tracked closely by the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory, has been emitting some high powered CMEs. Emergency Survival Action may become necessary in the days ahead. The latest of these huge CMEs, a M8.6 and M7.4 flares exploded from the suns surface on September 24th, 2011, and an even larger one on the 25th an M8.8. The good news is that the blast only delivered a glancing blow to the Earth's magnetic field on September 26th, 2011.

Is your Emergency Survival kit in good order? You may need it in the days ahead, as sunspot 1302 continues to unleash more of the gigantic eruptions. We have been lucky so far, as this sunspot has been mostly pointed away from us. This condition however, is rapidly changing, as the earth continues it's journey orbiting the sun, we will be entering a more direct path in front of these eruptions. According to NASA scientist sunspot 1302 is still growing and shows no immediate signs of quieting down.

Our more modern society didn't really pay too much attention to solar storms until the Carrington Event of 1859. This was an enormous coronal mass ejection (CME) that carried enough electromagnet energy to overwhelm the Earth protective magnetic field and knock out the only real technology of the time, the telegraph system. The electromagnetic energy carried enough of a punch to shock some of the telegraph operators, and even start fires in some cases.

In March of 1989, a solar storm much less intense than that of 1859 caused a major power grid in Canada covering an entire province to go down for nine hours. It damaged transformers in Quebec, New Jersey, and Great Britain, as well as causing more than 200 power anomalies across the USA. Then in 1994, two communications satellites suffered major malfunctions, disrupting radio, television, and other communications due to a solar storm. Another storm triggered a regional blackout in southern Sweden and may have damaged transformers in South Africa, in October of 2003.

The Earth won the roulette spin, on April 19th, 2010. One of the most massive eruptions in years was observed by NASA's SDO, but fortunately we were not in the line of fire this time. Again on August 1st 2010, the sun emitted a C-class solar flare that spewed a coronal mass ejecting in our direction. The CME impacted with our magnetic field on August 3rd. This one was only strong enough to provide a brilliant aurora seen down to about the 45th parallel. On Valentines day 2011, a M6.6-category X-ray irradiance magnitude blast was unleashed from our sun.

Scientist are predicting that these solar storms and CMEs will continue in strength and frequency through 2012 and into 2013. So take a moment and imagine life without electricity for days, months, or even years if we get hit by a huge CME head on. Now consider how inexpensive it is to assemble or purchase an Emergency Survival Kit. So don't wait any longer get your Emergency Survival kit in order today!
